Safety and Operational Considerations
The RidgeRun Immersive Teleoperation documentation from RidgeRun is presently being developed. |
RidgeRun Immersive Teleoperation is designed with multiple safety mechanisms to ensure predictable and controlled robot operation. Operators should be familiar with these mechanisms and follow safe operating practices when controlling the robot remotely, especially during immersive VR operation.
Control Authority and Command Enforcement
The system enforces exclusive control authority, ensuring that only one operator can actively control the robot at any given time. Motion and camera commands are accepted and executed only from the current authority holder. Commands received from non-authorized clients are ignored.
If the robot loses contact with the operator holding authority, control authority is automatically revoked. In this condition, all motion commands are disabled and the robot transitions to a safe stopped state.
In addition, the robot continuously monitors the reception of motion commands. If motion commands are not received within the expected interval, the robot automatically stops. This behavior prevents unintended motion in the event of communication delays, application failures, or operator inactivity.
Operational Safety
Operators should ensure that the robot is operated in an environment appropriate for remote control. The robot’s surroundings should be clear of obstacles, people, and hazards before initiating teleoperation. The operator should maintain awareness of the robot’s operating area and be prepared to stop operation if unsafe conditions arise.
Teleoperation should be performed with stable network connectivity to minimize latency and packet loss, which can affect control responsiveness and situational awareness.
VR Safety Considerations
When using the VR interface, operators should remain aware of their physical surroundings. The immersive nature of the VR headset may reduce awareness of nearby objects, people, or obstacles in the operator’s environment.
Operators should:
- Use the VR headset in a clear, unobstructed area
- Ensure sufficient physical space to move safely
- Avoid walking or moving around while wearing the headset
- Remove the headset immediately if experiencing discomfort, disorientation, or loss of situational awareness
VR teleoperation should be supervised when used in shared or dynamic environments, and operators should take regular breaks to avoid fatigue.
