Supported Platforms

This section describes the NVIDIA Jetson platforms supported in this workspace and used throughout this wiki.

As part of the transition toward NVIDIA maintained Yocto integration, multiple Jetson families are available through a unified Yocto build environment.

While the build system and layer structure remain consistent, each platform is selected through the MACHINE variable, which determines the hardware specific configuration used during build and deployment.

Jetson AGX Orin is used as the primary reference platform in this guide because it provides a stable baseline for validation and feature enablement.

Machine configuration files can also be found under:

meta-tegra/conf/machine/

These configuration files define the platform-specific settings used by each supported Jetson target.

For additional platform and hardware information, refer to the official NVIDIA Jetson documentation.

Reference Targets used in this Wiki

The following platforms are used directly in the examples and validation steps described in this guide.

MACHINE Board / Module Description Role in This Wiki Notes

jetson-agx-orin-devkit-industrial Jetson AGX Orin Industrial 64GB module in P3737 carrier Reference AGX Orin variant Useful for industrial SKU validation
jetson-agx-thor-devkit Jetson AGX Thor dev kit, P3834-0008 module in P4071-0000 carrier Additional reference platform Demonstrates portability of the Yocto environment across newer platforms
jetson-agx-thor-t4000 Jetson AGX Thor dev kit, P3834-0000 module in P4071-0000 carrier Additional Thor variant Secondary Thor configuration for validation
jetson-orin-nano-devkit Jetson Orin Nano dev kit Compact reference platform Suitable for smaller and lower power systems
jetson-orin-nano-devkit-nvme Jetson Orin Nano dev kit using NVMe for rootfs Storage variant reference Useful for storage specific configurations

Additional Machine Variants

In addition to the reference platforms, the meta-tegra provides a broader set of machine definitions that map to specific module and carrier combinations.

These are particularly useful when matching production hardware or validating different SKUs within the same Jetson family.

How Platform Selection Works

In a Yocto build environment, the MACHINE variable defines the complete hardware configuration used during image generation.

It controls:

  • Device tree selection, including DTB and DTBO files
  • Bootloader and firmware configuration
  • Partition layout and flashing assets
  • Kernel configuration and hardware support
  • Package recommendations and platform specific features

Although the overall build process remains consistent across platforms, the selected MACHINE ensures that the generated image is tailored for the target hardware.

Additional details about selecting and configuring the target MACHINE are covered in: Quick Setup
