FPD Link III SerDes Linux driver

From RidgeRun Developer Wiki

FPD Link III Description

FPD-Link III, an acronym for Flat Panel Display Link III, is an interface used in many automotive applications to transport audio/video between points. This interface enables the transport of high-definition digital video, as well as a bidirectional control channel, over a low-cost cable, either twisted pair or coax. There are FPD-Link III serializers and deserializers (SerDes) that have been optimized either for the link between a processor and a display or between the processor and a camera.

Key Features

  • Adaptive Equalization: This feature Compensates cable length and age.
  • I2C Aliases: The aliases allow I2C communication to several hardware instances like cameras in the same I2C bus.

  • Power-over-coax (PoC): a single cable allows data transmission and power.

  • Multiple interface options: RGB, YUV, OpenLDI (LVDS), MIPI CSI-2, HDMI.
  • Frame synchronization: internal and external trigger signals.

  • Virtual Channel ID: The channel virtualization creates interleaved video streams on a single CSI-2 port. The mapping values are configured internally in the deserializer.

Tested SerDes devices

  • The DS90UB953A is a compact serializer especially suited for camera applications in the automotive field.
  • The DS90UB960 is a deserializer HUB that handles up to 4 simultaneous connections to serializers.
