When to Consider a Maintained Xavier Platform
Not every Jetson project has the same requirements.
Some teams are building new products and can freely choose the latest hardware platform. Others already have deployed systems, validated software, and customer commitments that make platform changes significantly more expensive.
This section helps identify the situations where maintaining an existing AGX Xavier or Xavier NX platform may be more practical than pursuing an immediate hardware migration.
Products Already in the Field
A maintained Xavier platform is most valuable when a product is already deployed and expected to remain in service for years.
In these situations, the challenge is often not hardware capability. The challenge is keeping the existing platform supportable while continuing to address maintenance requirements, security updates, customer commitments, and operational needs.
Common examples include products based on Jetson AGX Xavier or Jetson Xavier NX that are already deployed in production environments and continue to generate business value.
Long Lifecycle Products
Many embedded products remain active far longer than traditional consumer devices.
Industrial systems, robotics platforms, medical equipment, transportation systems, and edge AI appliances often have operational lifecycles measured in years rather than months.
In these environments, platform stability and predictable maintenance are frequently more important than adopting new hardware generations as soon as they become available.
A maintained Xavier platform can help extend the usable life of these systems while reducing the disruption associated with major platform changes.
Security and Maintenance Requirements
Some organizations must continue receiving kernel updates and security fixes throughout the operational life of a product.
This is especially important when products:
- Remain connected to customer networks
- Operate in regulated environments
- Require ongoing maintenance agreements
- Must satisfy internal security policies
For these products, maintaining an actively supported kernel baseline can be an important part of the overall support strategy.
When Migration Is Expensive
Moving to a new hardware platform is rarely limited to replacing a development board.
A platform transition often requires software updates, validation activities, testing cycles, documentation updates, manufacturing adjustments, and customer communication.
When these costs become significant, extending the life of an existing Xavier deployment may be the more practical short term decision.
This allows organizations to continue supporting current products while planning future platform transitions on their own schedule.
Situations Where This May Not Be Necessary
A maintained Xavier platform is not always the right solution.
Projects that are still in the prototype stage, products without long-term support requirements, or new designs that can easily adopt newer Jetson platforms may benefit more from starting directly on a newer hardware generation.
The greatest value typically appears when there is already an investment in Xavier-based products that needs to be preserved and maintained over time.
